The Essence Of Relationship Coaching

“A productive coaching relationship begins with two people with fires in their bellies: one who wants desperately to move forward and another who yearns to help that person make the journey.” James A. Belasco
The above statement succinctly describes the inner workings of the relationship coach and his or her clients. The relationship coach must first and foremost have an ardent desire to help others.
As Shawn from The Good Doctor said, “… I want to do that for other people.” The coach should want to help people navigate the ups and downs of relationships with knowledge, insight, and the proper application of principles.
Relationship coaching is the type of coaching that helps people communicate effectively, outline proper boundaries, resolve conflicts, and establish peace with their significant other. The coach also helps people identify and change negative patterns in their relationships.
“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” Timothy Gallwey
I often use the Michael Jordan-Phil Jackson analogy to describe relationship coaching. Phil Jackson didn’t teach Michael Jordan how to play basketball. He taught Michael Jordan how to maximize the skills he had in order to win. That’s what a relationship coach should do.
He or she doesn’t teach you how to be in a relationship. He or she allows you to learn the right relationship skills in order to have a peaceful, long-term, and productive partnership.
Relationship coaching can be incredibly helpful for people who are struggling in their union. Here are a couple of quick tips: 1. If the non-negotiables haven’t been violated, the other issues can be worked out with compromise. 2. While you’re having problems in the relationship, don’t stop having sex.
This is a huge mistake that many couples make. Know! Continuing to share physical pleasure with one another can lead quickly to emotional and physiological healing. Therefore, don’t cut off your physical connection because of relationship problems.
The coach must provide support and guidance as you work to improve your relationship issues. If you’re considering hiring a relationship coach, it’s important to choose someone who you feel comfortable with. This is what the consultation call is for. So the coach and clients can make sure there’s a comfort level and that the clients understand there will be an investment in time, money, and effort.
Most people think of coaching as something that only athletes or business people need. Nothing could be further from the truth. Also, relationship coaching can help you regarding family and business relationships because of some basic principles that are taught.
“Good coaching is good teaching and nothing else.” Pat Conroy
