What is it that drives me now? What motivates me to keep going, even when things are slow or challenging? I will give you this tradition as a foundation for this blog. “All of a person’s deeds stop when he enters the grave, except three: 1) A righteous offspring who will pray for him 2) Beneficial knowledge he left behind 3) An ongoing charity.”
This is it. Sometimes we get so caught up in the glitter and pomp of this world that we forget that we can’t stay here. So, I ask myself and you once again, what is the legacy you want to leave behind? How do you want to be remembered? The answer for me is clear. I’ve done bad things in my life, and God has been so merciful to me. He has given me a chance to turn over a new leaf. He has blessed me with an opportunity to leave a legacy that my mother would be proud of.
We are in a time in history where beneficial acts and good have never been more valuable. A time where, despite what we see on the news, we can assist so many people. I live in a building with some elderly people, and my neighbor is one of them.
Anyway, I heard a strange noise come from her apartment one morning and I went to check on her. The other day she put a card under my door that said she loves me. I was touched. This is what I advocate because this is what I want. Don’t get me wrong, I have flaws and weaknesses. But God has placed in my heart the desire for good.
There is another tradition that states, “None of you truly believe until you love for the people what you love for yourself.” This is the legacy I want to leave behind. That is, when blessed with the opportunity, encourage others to strive for their best.
I spoke about legacy a few weeks ago. The older I get, the more I think about it. Every day we’re above the earth we have a chance to improve our own lives, and to help other people improve theirs. We must seize this opportunity we have. For ourselves, our families, our friends, and whoever we can touch. The legacy I want to leave is summarized in the tradition I stated above. What do you want your legacy to be?
