The Messenger said, “Prayer is a light. Charity is a proof. Patience is like the sun.” These are 3 lights that guide us through difficult times. These 3 forms of illumination are what we should resort to during this time of crisis.
Believe it or not, we are fortunate. I mean anyone who has the good health and peace to sit and read this. With that said, we must take advantage of this good fortune by spreading light and knowing that there is light at the end of this Covid-19 tunnel.
Many of us have been walking in the dark tunnel of pessimism so long that we cannot find our way out. The 3 things listed above, can free us from the negative outlook we have become accustomed to. Indeed, prayer is a light. It is soothing especially when we know we are calling on the only One Who has complete control of His creation.
It is also a light because when it is performed sincerely it makes us feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. It gives us clarity when life becomes confusing. Is that not what light is for? When we walk into a dark room we really can’t see anything until we turn on a light. This is the example of prayer. It guides us through dark times and helps us be grateful for blessings.
This is a time of darkness; therefore, we need to grab this light and turn it on more than we ever have before. If not for ourselves, than for our families, the families of the people who have been directly affected by this terrible disease, the doctors, nurses, medical personnel, police, grocery store workers, mail carriers, and all of the essential workers who are putting their lives on the line everyday so we can be safe.
Prayer is an indication that we possess an inner light because it is a sign that we have real concern for our well-being and the welfare of the other people we pray for. It takes time and a level of humility to speak with God, ask Him for help for ourselves and others, and to seek forgiveness for our faults. Let us know, with practical application, that prayer is a light we can use at any time.
Charity is a proof. How is this? It is a proof that we want to help other people. The word that is used in this tradition is Burhan. Burhan means, the rays that come from behind the clouds letting us know that the sun is there even though we haven’t seen it yet. Charity is a proof because it is just like the old adage, “Put your money where your mouth is.”
However, wealth is not the only form of charity. During the times we’re living in, just reaching out to someone and asking how they are doing is a form of charity. As a matter of fact, that happened to me last night. A friend of mine I hadn’t seen or spoken to since 2015, sent me is number on Messenger because he wanted to talk with me during these troubled times.
That’s a proof that he is selfless and not selfish. Let us give during this time. Even if it’s nothing other than a kind word or a smile. All these things are a proof that we care about others. Patience is like the sun. This is a big one that so many of us are struggling with. This is the era of instant gratification, so we don’t want to wait, and unfortunately, many of us aren’t. Some of us are still leaving our homes because we feel like it every chance we get. This is not fair. However, it is the reality of the time we’re living in.
But for those of us who are practicing patience, know that when the sun comes out it will make everything bright and beautiful. Just wait for it. I mentioned in a podcast about patience, that sometimes patience consist of waiting. This is one of those times. We must wait this out, and more importantly, we must wait patiently. Meaning, if we feel like complaining, then complain to the One Who can truly help us by resorting to the 1st form of light (prayer). We may not see the benefit in all of this now, and we never will if we don’t practice patience during this time. Understand, just as patience is like the sun, not practicing it brings more darkness.
There are benefits and blessings that we will miss out on if we don’t let the sun (patience) shine through. I urge myself and you to hold on to these 3 forms of light, and God willing, we will be better for it on the other side.
